Red Wine Nals Margreid Anticus Riserva 2019. It is recommended to open it half an hour before serving. The Nals Margreid cooperative winery has long been a role model throughout the South Tyrol region. 140 winegrowers deliver their grapes here from excellent plots, which cover 14 sub-regions (located along the Alto Adige wine route) and are located at an altitude of between 200 and 900 meters. Each sub-region has a particular terroir, which gives the wines their specific elegance. The Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes are harvested by hand and immediately taken to the winery. Fermentation takes place in small wood at a controlled temperature. After fermentation, Anticus Baron Salvadori Riserva is aged for 22 months in oak barrels. This Bordeaux blend fills the glass with a garnet red color, tinged with ruby reflections. The nose is filled with aromas of red berries and cassis, underlined by fine spicy hints. In the mouth, the elegant harmony and vigor of Cabernet is combined with the sinuous softness and juiciness of Merlot. The Anticus Baron Salvadori is an excellent and characterful red from the South Tyrol that pairs with great taste with dishes based on beef or lamb, meat pies, game and savory aged cheeses.

Red Wine Neudorf Toms Block Pinot Noir 2019. Nelson is New Zealand’s sunniest wine region and has largely escaped mass production winemaking thanks to its isolated setting at the northern tip of the South Island. Pioneers Tim & Judy Finn founded one of the area’s top boutique wineries here in the late 1970s in the Moutere sub-region. Today they specialise in producing premium Pinot Noir and Chardonnay made without any vineyard irrigation thanks to the excellent clay soils which retain plenty of moisture. Tom’s Block Pinot Noir is a magnificent single vineyard grown on the estate’s signature Moutere clay soils which help emphasise the elegance and rich red fruit character of the variety. The fruit is all harvested by hand to maximise quality and fermented with wild yeasts in open top fermenters. Ageing takes place in French oak barrels for 10 months followed by blending, racking and bottling. The result is a complex, multi-layered Pinot that opens with delicate notes of raspberries, sour cherry and cranberries underscored by hints of baked earth, dried herbs and spice. On the palate there’s a medium body, bright acidity and clean, pure finish culminating in attractive red fruit flavours which linger on the tongue.

Red Wine Tapiz Alta Collection Malbec 2019. This great value red is made by famed winemaking consultant Jean-Claude Berrouet who used to make wine at the legendary Chateau Petrus in Bordeaux and Dominus in Napa Valley. Tapiz is one of Argentina’s most high-tech and innovative wineries with its own research and development team who partner with local bodies like the University of Cuyo to conduct cutting-edge studies into the terroir and winemaking techniques. Tapiz’s Alta Collection wines are all made from top quality grapes from Finca San Pablo in Mendoza’s Uco Valley. The vineyards here sit at 1400 metres above sea level in the foothills of the dramatic Andes Mountains. This stunning setting benefits from cooling mountain breezes and a large temperature difference between the day and night which helps to preserve freshness and aromatic complexity in the grapes. On the nose there are enticing hints of ripe plums, jammy blackcurrants and cherries while the first sip reveals a well-rounded full body, smooth tannins and long spicy finish with notes of cinnamon and clove from the oak ageing. This plush Malbec has great balance and plenty of freshness, making it a great match for tomato-based pasta dishes and pizzas.
