Red Wine Montes Purple Angel 2018. Decant 1 hour before serving. Purple Angel signifies Montes’ rise to global status. First released in 2005, its popularity put this 100% Chilean owned and operated brand on the international map. It is both bold and approachable, ready now and ageable. Purple Angel is composed of 92% Carmenere, 8% Petit Verdot from the Finca de Apalta and El Arcángel de Marchigüe estate vineyards located in the Colchagua Valley. The soils are of granitic origin, vary in texture, and are notable for the presence of different types of fluvial and glacial stones. This medium-full bodied wine shows a rich purple in the glass with garnet flections. It is voluminous in the mouth and contains medium tannins and great structure. Fruit-forward aromas are at first plump – blackberry and blueberry – then dense and concentrated – dried plum, cherry preserves and blackcurrant candy. 18 months in French yield toasty notes, nuttiness and sweet spice. The palate follows the dark fruit aromas before leather, cocoa and balsamic emerge. Pair this wine with poultry or absolutely anything revolving around pork fat – lardo, charcuterie, ribs, etc. It would also do well with aged cheese, a creamy risotto or carbonara.

Red Wine Mordoree Lirac La Dame Rousse 2018. This plush southern Rhone red opens with inviting aromas of red plums, strawberries and dried violets, while the palate offers a silky smooth mouthfeel, soft tannins and intense crushed red berry and sweet spice flavours. The long finish and fruit-forward character make this an excellent accompaniment for charcuterie and hard cheeses as well as grilled red meats. The Mordoree estate was established in 1986 by Francis Delorme and his son Christophe in the southern part of the Rhone Valley. The domaine takes its name from the humble woodcock bird, reflecting Mordoree’s philosophy of working in harmony with nature to produce sensational wines. Today the domaine is run by Christophe’s wife and daughter who try to produce the best wines possible from their vines while preserving the estate in perfect condition ready for the next generation to inherit. The 50 hectares of vines are farmed organically and the family also follows biodynamic principles in the vineyard and winery. This delicious red is composed of Grenache and Syrah grapes which are carefully harvested by hand from the family’s 40 year old vines. In the winery the grapes are vinified in stainless steel tanks to showcase the pure varietal character of the Grenache and Syrah in the finished wine.

Red Wine Mullineux Syrah 2018. Andrea and Chris Mullineux are the Swartland’s power winemaking couple thanks to the impressive success of their winery which was founded in 2007. In total they’ve racked up over thirty 5-star ratings from Platter’s South African Wine Guide and Andrea has also been named Wine Enthusiast’s International Winemaker of the Year in 2016. The pair have earned a cult following and rave reviews thanks to their delicious Syrah and Chenin Blanc wines. Fruit is carefully selected from their partner growers as well as their own vineyards on Roundstone Farm near the iconic Kasteelberg mountain. Bursting with luscious cassis, blackberries and dark plums, this intense Syrah is ideal for anyone who loves big, bold red wines. Fruit is sourced from prime vineyards planted on shale, schist and granite soils which helps create a well-structured and powerful wine. Once in the winery the fruit is fermented with indigenous yeasts and the young wine then aged in French oak barrels for 11 months. It is bottled without fining or filtering to preserve the natural character of the grapes and terroir. Ideal for enjoying alongside hearty meat dishes or cellaring for a few more years if desired.
