Red Wine La Spinetta Barolo Campe 2018. Decant 1 hour before serving. The La Spinetta story dates right back to the 1890s when Giovanni Rivetti set off from his native Piedmont to make his fortune in Argentina. Giovanni dreamed of returning home to retire and found his own winery, but it was to be his grandson, Giuseppe, who eventually achieved this ambition in 1977. When Giusppe founded the winery in Castagnole Lanze the region was primarily known for its sweet Moscato d’Asti wines, but the Rivettis brought with them a vision of making top quality wines from the exceptional local terroir. In 2000 after considerable success crafting great red wines on the estate, the family decided to purchase land in Barolo. They built a state-of-the-art cellar on their property in Grinzane Cavour and began to produce this exceptional Barolo from the finest grapes on the estate. These vines have an average age of 70 years which produce exceptionally concentrated fruit. Following vinification the young wine is aged in French oak barrels for 24 months followed by at least another 12 months of ageing in the bottle. On the nose you find all the classic Barolo notes including rose petals, baked earth, tar and hints of dried herbs and bright berries. Bold and powerful from the first sip, this is a generous, full-bodied wine with Nebbiolo’s typical firm tannins which will respond very well to extended cellaring over the next decade or so.

Red Wine La Spinetta Pin 2018. La Spinetta is today considered one of Piedmont’s most iconic contemporary wineries. Founded in 1977 by Giuseppe Rivetti, the estate is now run by his son, Giorgio Rivetti, whose talent and hard work has put La Spinetta on the map for exceptional wines made from indigenous grape varieties which capture the essence of the local terroir. This characterful red is crafted from Nebbiolo and Barbera and named after Giuseppe Rivetti’s family nickname, Pin”. First produced in 1989, the grapes are sourced from the family’s prized Bionzo vineyard in Neive which was planted in 1975. The Barbera grapes are harvested first, in mid to late September, followed by the Nebbiolo in early October to ensure the fruit reaches optimal ripeness. The varieties are then vinified separately and then aged in French oak barrels for 16-18 months before blending. As soon as you pour out a glass you’ll notice the ruby red hue and bright cherry, crushed raspberry and dried herb notes on the nose. The first sip reveals a silky smooth texture, firm tannins and intense red fruit flavours which mingle with hints of earth and underbrush. This is a great gastronomic wine ideal for pairing with many classic Italian dishes including roasted wild boar and venison as well as hearty pastas and stews.
