Red Wine Felsina Chianti Colli Senesi Farnetella 2018. The Felsina estate is one of the leading producers of Chianti Classico thanks to the foresight of former schoolteacher Giuseppe Mazzocolin who took over the running of the property from his father-in-law in the 1980s. Giuseppe enlisted the help of legendary enologist Franco Bernabei and replanted much of the estate’s 75 hectares of vines as well as modernising the winemaking facilities. In 1981 the family purchased the Castello di Farnetella estate in the appellation of Chianti Colli Senesi which is set on a hill with a maximum altitude of 560 metres. The estate is well-suited to Sangiovese although there are also smaller plots of Merlot, Syrah, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Sangiovese grapes used for the Farnetella are all harvested by hand and chosen for their soft and easy-going flavour profile. A small amount of Merlot is also added to contribute a rich fruit character and smoothness to the finished wine. Following the fermentation the wine is aged in oak casks for up to 12 months which adds sweet baking spice aromas to the attractive cherry and dried violets on the nose. The first sip reveals a full body, well-rounded texture and ripe red berry flavours.

Red Wine Francis Ford Coppola Director’s Cut Zinfandel 2018. Decanting is optional, up to half an hour before serving. In 2006, renowned film director Francis Ford Coppola moved into the wine business, purchasing and renovating Chateau Souverain in Sonoma County. He built a winery that was visually inspired by Copenhagen’s famous Tivoli Gardens amusement park, a place where adults can enjoy a taste of stunning Coppola wine, while their children play. The Coppola’s have a considerable wine-making heritage. Agostino Coppola, Francis Ford’s grandfather, steeped his own wine in the basement of his New York apartment, using homemade cement barrels. Francis Ford Coppola himself has collected wine for over 30 years, and the delicious range of wines now available at Francis Ford Coppola Winery is the culmination of a lifetime’s obsession. The Director’s Cut Zinfandel is a dark crimson, wafting with the aromas of a blackberry tart: jam, cinnamon, brown sugar and aniseed all emerge from this deep red. On the palate, playful red fruits emerge. Succulent notes of strawberry mix with elements of red cherry and caramel. It is soft in the mouth, with balanced acidity and tannins. The Zinfandel is blended with a hefty chunk of Petite Sirah, and a splash of Cabernet Sauvignon. It will complement a variety of dishes, think about pairing it with grilled vegetable kebabs, a goulash stew, or a hearty steak.
