Red Wine Domaine Sigalas Mavrotragano 2020. No need to decant. In the ancient plain of Oia, located in the north-western part of Santorini, the Domaine Sigalas produces fine wines repeatedly awarded in international competitions both in Greece and abroad, from the local varieties Assyrtiko, Aidani, Athiri, Mandilarià, and Mavrotragano. The exploitation and understanding of the potential of these native vines is the company’s mission. In particular, the owner, Paris Sigalas, has managed to save the Mavrotragano vine from extinction. The island of Santorini has a unique terroir made of volcanic soil and a particular climate, with long hours of sunshine for most of the year, strong temperature variations and winds. This intense red wine is produced with 100% native Mavrotragano grapes from selected vineyards of the island of Santorini, from a blend of young vines and some old vines over 60 years old. The wine is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels. The Sigalas Mavrotragano has a deep red color with violet highlights. On the nose, there are notes of ripe red fruits, jam, figs, and sweet spices. On the palate, it has a rich body, with balanced tannins and acidity. Have it with grilled meat, rich vegetarian dishes of the Mediterranean cuisine, and soft cheeses.

Its beautiful ruby color has violet reflections. The nose has a delicious scent of red and black fruits such as raspberry, currant, and blueberries, accompanied by suggestive floral notes such as violet and a slight spicy touch reminiscent of cloves and vanilla. Red Wine Domini Veneti Valpolicella Superiore Verjago 2020. This charming Valpolicella Superiore hails from Cantina Valpolicella Negrar which was founded by seven local producers in 1933. The Cantina has played a pivotal role in the local wine scene over the years, with the first ever Amarone bottled here in 1939. These days the cooperative has more than 200 members and specialises in characterful, authentic wines made using modern techniques and cutting-edge technology. Domini Veneti is the label reserved for their very best wines like this elegant Valpolicella. The indigenous varieties are grown on the best hilly plots and the grapes are hand-harvested to optimise quality. Once in the winery the grapes are then left to dry out for 40 days prior to vinification. The young wine is then aged in the traditional way in large 50 hectolitre Slavonian oak casks for around 24 months followed by 6 months of ageing in the bottle. This creates a graceful and complex Valpolicella Superiore with a generous full body, firm, well-developed tannins and intense notes of red cherry, dried fruit, dark chocolate and warming spice from the oak ageing. A great wine to hold in the cellar for a few more years or enjoy now with venison, roast beef or hearty red meat ragus served with fresh pasta.
