Red Wine Burn Cottage Vineyard Pinot Noir 2019. Decant 1 hour before serving. New Zealand’s Central Otago pushes winemaking to its limits and is home to the world’s most southerly vineyards. Burn Cottage enjoys a particularly important reputation as the first and only Central Otago winery to have practiced biodynamic methods since it was founded. The winery owes its success to the vision of Marquis Sauvage, who purchased 24 hectares of former sheep pasture here in the beautiful foothills of the Pisa mountains, and winemaker Ted Lemon who believes that top quality wine can only be made from top quality fruit. This is their flagship Pinot Noir which is bottled with an unusual label featuring a 1795 fairy tale called The Green Snake and the Beautiful Lily” which references the harmonious interaction between humanity and nature in biodynamic agriculture. Once in the winery the fruit is treated with minimal intervention with no addition of yeast for the fermentation process and very limited sulphur usage. After vinification the wine is matured in French oak barrels. Enchanting notes of red plum, orange peel, exotic spice and savoury herbal notes define the nose while the first sip reveals a medium body, smooth tannins and a well-rounded texture. The finish is long and elegant with delicate hints of cinnamon, woodsmoke and rich red fruit flavours.

Red Wine Ca’ Momi Cabernet Sauvignon 2019. Bringing Italian winemaking expertise to Napa’s exceptional terroir, Ca’ Momi is a modern wine label founded in 2006 by a trio of Italian winemakers, Dario De Conti, Valentina Guolo-Migotto and Stefano Migotto. After moving to California to work alongside their American winemaking cousins, the three fell in love with the Napa Valley and decided to found their very own winery. The project is named after Momi dea Bionda, the former owner of the house which appears on their labels, who used to watch over his vineyards with a motorbike, his blind dog, and a rifle. Their wines invoke that same free and authentic spirit, with delicious fruit flavours and plenty of pure varietal character. This punchy Cabernet opens with aromatic notes of rhubarb, dark cherries, licorice, cedar and leather. On the palate there’s a silky smooth texture, firm tannins and intense dark fruit flavours seasoned with hints of tobacco, baking spice and chocolate. This is a great value Napa Cab that’s perfect to enjoy with hearty dishes like barbecued ribs, a ribeye steak with fries, a hearty aubergine parmigiana or rich tomato-based pasta dishes like pappardelle with wild boar ragu.

Red Wine Ca’ Momi Rosso di Napa 2019. A fusion of Napa Valley terroir and Italian winemaking heritage, Ca’ Momi was founded in 2006 by a trio of Italians, Dario De Conti, Valentina Guolo-Migotto and Stefano Migotto. Dario and Stefano had earned a reputation as talented young winemakers in their native country in the 1990s before relocating to California. Here they soon fell in love with the Napa Valley, founding their own label which interprets the region’s natural beauty in typical Italian style. Their easygoing Rosso di Napa is reminiscent of a classic Italian house wine that’s perfect for celebrating cosy family dinners and casual gatherings. It’s made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Merlot and Petite Syrah and is just lightly oaked to allow the varietal character and quality of the grapes to shine through. On the nose there’s intense blueberry, cassis and blackberry notes along with a hint of woodsmoke, toast and spice. The first sip reveals a generous full body, smooth tannins and a long finish seasoned with oaky hints, plums and crushed wild berries. The bold flavour profile and very drinkable style make this a great wine to serve with tomato-based pastas, pizzas, charcuterie and other classic Italian dishes like aubergine parmigiana.
