Red Wine Bogle Old Vine Zinfandel 2019. The story of Bogle winery dates back to the 1870s when Civil War infantryman Captain AJ Boyle left his native Tennessee along with his nephew, Samuel, to make a new life in California. The family have been farmers in Clarksburg ever since and began growing grapes to sell to local wineries by the fourth generation. Today the estate is run by siblings Warren, Jody and Ryan who represent the sixth generation of the family to farm this land. The trio are passionate about maintaining the estate in optimal condition to pass it on to the next generation of Bogles which is why they have pursued sustainable and environmentally-friendly approaches to winemaking. These include commitments to the California Rules for Sustainability requirements and achieving Certified Green status in the vineyard. The family’s Old Vine Zinfandel is certain to please lovers of big bold reds thanks to the abundance of rich dark fruit flavours, firm tannins, and long finish. On the palate there is a generous full body, hints of cassis, oak and smoke seasoned with black pepper. The powerful flavour profile makes this a great match for red meats or a wine to be enjoyed on its own by the fireside.

Red Wine Bogle Merlot 2019. It is recommended to decant it for half an hour. The Bogle Winery is located on the Sacramento River, about half an hour from Sacramento, in an idyllic but almost deserted area of California. The estate dates back to the 19th century and the first vineyards were planted in 1968. Today the company is still a family business, where all members are actively involved in the everyday operations, which is why their entire wine range has an extremely high level of quality. The Bogle winery grows Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Merlot, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Pinot Noir, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc. The Bogle Merlot is a perfect example of full-bodied California Merlot, aged for 12 months in American oak barrels. In the glass, the color is a bright cherry red. On the nose, it develops delicious aromas of cherry, black plum, blackcurrants, and smoked meat with an exotic touch and a hint of black pepper. The wine is lively and rich, with firm but velvety tannins and hints of pipe tobacco and spiced oak that give weight to the finish. A delicious wine that is the perfect partner to a barbecue, a grilled steak, a plate of pasta with meat sauce, or grilled chicken with oriental spices.

Red Wine Tenuta Ulisse Unico Montepulciano d’Abruzzo 2019. The Ulisses have been making wine in the charming Abruzzo countryside for three generations since the purchase of the family’s first vineyard in the early 1900s by Antonio Ulisse. Decades later his grandsons, Antonio and Luigi, decided to found their very own winery to realise their dreams of bottling and selling wines made from the family’s exquisite vineyards near the town of Crecchio. The current Tenuta Ulisse estate was founded in 2006, but despite its relative youth the brothers have already succeeded in making a name for their top-quality Abruzzo wines which showcase the very best of the region’s indigenous varieties. This youthful Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is vinified and aged in stainless steel tanks which helps to preserve the pure character of the variety. Crushed dark berries, black cherries and baked earth characterise the nose while on the palate there is an abundance of rich dark fruit flavours complemented by a full body and soft, smooth tannins. The vibrancy and freshness of this wine makes it an ideal wine to drink alongside cheeses and Italian charcuterie as well as heartier dishes like fresh pasta served with a rich tomato-based sauce.
