Red Wine Rizzi Barbaresco Riserva Boito 2015. Ernesto Dellapiana followed his dreams to found his own winery in 1974 on the estate that has been in his family since the 19th century. He’s fond of saying I have a crazy love for the earth”, a phrase that reflects his true passion for creating beautiful wines inspired by the stunning scenery of the Langhe region. Recently, his two sons have taken over the running of the estate and now look after some 40 hectares of vines which include some of Barbaresco’s finest crus. Enrico is an artist and paints the images that feature on their labels as well as making the family’s wines. This stunning example comes from their Cascina Boito estate which was historically owned by the family and was bought back by Ernesto in 1984. Their Boito vineyard is located in the upper part of the Rizzi cru where the soils are deeper and contain more clay. This produces a muscular and robust wine with excellent ageing potential. That’s why it is aged in large Slavonian oak barrels for 18-21 months and it is only released around 50 months after the harvest. Powerful and full of complexity, this is a Barbaresco that’s worth cellaring for a few more years or serving alongside hearty dishes like a ribeye steak, beef stews, or barbecued meats. Ripe plum, violets, licorice and leather dominate on the nose, while the palate offers firm tannins, a solid core of fruit, and a very long finish seasoned with earthy and spiced notes.

Red Wine Rubinelli Vajol Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2015. It is recommended to decant it for an hour. The Rubinelli Vajol company is located between the millenary parish church of San Floriano and San Pietro in Cariano, in the geographical center of the historic Valpolicella. Gaetano Rubinelli, the progenitor of the Rubinelli family, bought the Vajol estate for its perfect basin conformation characterized by an ideal exposure to the sun and a breezy and temperate climate that guarantees perfect drying of the grapes. They produce only numbered bottles of the five red wines of the Valpolicella Classico: Amarone, Ripasso, Valpolicella Classico Superiore, Valpolicella Classico, and Recioto. The grapes of Corvina (40%), Molinara (5%), Rondinella (10%), Corvinone (40%), and Oseleta (5%) rest for four months in the loft dug into the tuff where the natural drying process takes place. The finished wine is then aged in oak barrels for about 18 months. Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Rubinelli Vajol has a deep purple-red color, with ruby reflections. On the nose, it shows a wide and very intense aromatic profile, with hints of black cherry, notes of orange blossom and Mediterranean herbs, and tones of pepper, licorice, and dark chocolate. In the mouth, the wine is complex and aromatic with good roundness and an excellent concentration of flavors that leave a long aftertaste. Excellent in combination with roasted and stewed meats, such as pork shank.

Red Wine Rubinelli Vajol Recioto della Valpolicella Classico 2015. It is recommended to decant it for an hour. The Rubinelli Vajol winery and its 10 hectares of vineyards are located in the Conca del Vajol, in the hilly areas of Veneto. In this sunny area in the heart of the Valpolicella area, the soils are characterized by a strong presence of limestone and tuff, with traces of clay and skeleton. The perfect sun exposure and the temperate and well-ventilated climate create the ideal conditions for the cultivation of fine grapes, most of which are the indigenous Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, Molinara, and Oseleta. The Recioto della Valpolicella Classico Rubinelli Vajol is composed of a blend of 50% Corvina, 25% Corvinone, 15% Rondinella, 5% Molinara, and 5% Oseleta. The fermentation and maceration processes take place in stainless steel at a controlled temperature. The wine is aged first in steel for 3 months, then in a small oak barrel for a short period followed by a longer refinement in the bottle. The wine has a purplish red color with brilliant ruby reflections. The aromatic profile is intoxicating, with floral notes of roses and violets, hints of black cherry, strawberry, currant, raspberry, and blueberry, followed by spices, tobacco, and cocoa. In the mouth, it is warm, silky, and opulent with soft tannins. It is an extraordinary wine, particularly suitable with desserts based on red and dried fruit, or chocolate, but it is also excellent with aged or blue cheeses.
