Jean-Luc Colombo is nicknamed the Winemaking Wizard of the Rhône” for his visionary work in the region and his unique collection of wines crafted from top vineyard sites across the valley. Jean-Luc and his wife Anne purchased their first Rhône vineyard in Cornas in 1986 and since then the couple have become leaders in the region for their commitment to innovation and quality. Jean-Luc’s winemaking philosophy focuses on emphasising freshness and fruit in addition to power and ageing potential. He achieves this through techniques like destemming and restricting oak influence in the winery. His Les Bartavelles Chateauneuf-du-Pape is an exceptional example of Jean-Luc’s style, combining hints of rich blueberries, cassis and red plum with sweet spices, dried herbs, and a balancing freshness. This classic Chateauneuf-du-Pape is named after the small rock partridge that is commonly found in the region. Composed of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre, the young wine is partly matured in large oak barrels for 16 months to add complexity while retaining freshness and varietal purity. The result is a well-rounded, bold red wine with firm tannins and the ability to age and develop over at least the next decade.

Red Wine Jean-Luc Colombo Crozes-Hermitage Les Fees Brunes 2019. Decant 1 hour before serving. Nicknamed the Winemaking Wizard of the Rhône”, Jean-Luc Colombo bought his first Rhone Valley vineyard site with his wife Anne in Cornas in 1986. Despite first moving to the area to set up a pharmacy and oenology lab, the couple quickly built a reputation for making some of the region’s most original and authentic wines. Jean-Luc has been awarded the prestigious Légion d’Honneur award for his contributions to French winemaking and their winery has even been named one of the top 100 in the world by Wine & Spirits Magazine. This magnificent Crozes-Hermitage is a fine testament to Jean-Luc’s winemaking talent and vision. All of the Syrah grapes that go into the Les Fees Brunes are harvested by hand and following vinification the wine is then aged in oak barrels for a total of 15 months. On the nose this complex wine exudes layers of luscious blackcurrants and raspberries, dried Mediterranean herbs and dark chocolate. The first sip reveals the deep, concentrated dark fruit aromas you expect from a Rhone Valley red along with savoury, earthy notes and fresh acidity levels which give the wine poise and balance. Les Fees Brunes is an excellent wine to drink alongside herby roasted lamb, but if you have the patience to wait it will also continue to evolve and develop in the cellar over the next few years.

Red Wine Josue Rosso Terre Siciliane 2019. Josue Terre Siciliane is a side project of the La Bollina winery, followed by the oenologist Andrea Bernardini who knows very well the characteristics of the Italian indigenous grape varieties. In Sicily, the heart of the homeland of the Nero d’Avola grape, the oenologist sensed the potential of the fusion with Cabernet Sauvignon: the fruity dimension of Nero d’Avola is perfectly combined with the spicy personality of Cabernet. The result can only be a special cuvĂ©e! The Italian critic Luca Maroni assigned it 99 points, and the jury of the Mundus Vini tasting competition awarded it the Grand GOLD medal and the title of ‘Best of Show’. Its intense ruby red color is a pleasure for the eyes. The bouquet seduces with aromas of cherry and morello cherry typical of Nero d’Avola, but also of blueberry, rosemary, and pink pepper that are due to Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine, aged for 9 months in the best French oak barrels, is very elegant, powerful, but not overloaded, silky, and of fantastic length. This intense cuvĂ©e requires a substantial accompaniment. Veal, lamb, but also game, or an aged Pecorino will work due to its spicy dimension.
