Red Wine Chateau Purcari Academia Rara Neagra 2019. No need to decant. Located just 30 km from the Black Sea, Chateau Purcari has a long history as a winery dating back to 1827. It was the Russian Emperor Nicholas I, through a special decree, who recognized the property as the first official winery in Bessarabia (today known as Moldova). In this south-eastern corner of Moldova, the soil and climatic conditions are ideal for the cultivation of vines thanks also to the refreshing effect of the Black Sea and to the soils rich in rubidium similar to that of Bordeaux. The production of this wine involves some key elements: the heterogeneous terroir, the autochthonous vine that integrates perfectly with this soil, the high quality fruit and, last but not least, the passion and courage of the winemaker. Fermentation takes place in clay amphorae, and the wine is then left for a short rest in oak barrels. Produced from the best grapes in Moldova, this is a wine of great purity. The Academia Rara Neagra has an intense ruby color. On the nose, it shows aromas of cherries and plums, vanilla, dried fruit, pepper, and an oak finish. On the palate, it is velvety and refined, with good red fruit complexity and well integrated tannins. On the finish, it shows harmonious acidity with peppery and dried fruit notes. Perfect with a charcuterie board or with a steak.

Red Wine Chateau Purcari Academia Saperavi 2019. No need to decant but best to open it half an hour before serving. Chateau Purcari is currently the most prestigious Moldovan winery, reaching more than 25 markets worldwide. Located in the south-east of Moldova, near the Nistru River, and close to the Black Sea, this winery benefits from a specific ecosystem that is particularly favorable to vine growing. In 2010, Purcari created Alb de Purcari, a new line that has received numerous international awards and distinctions. In 2012, the company’s collection introduced its own ice wine, made from frozen Muscat Ottonel and Traminer. Academia Saperavi is the quintessential expression of the Georgian variety of the same name, reinterpreted by the pure expression of the Purcari terroir, resulting in an authentic wine of great finesse. Only 6,000 bottles are produced. And this is a very significant number as it is the number of years that have passed since the first recording on the use of amphorae in winemaking in Georgia. This characterful red wine has an intense ruby color with violet reflections. The nose is full of explosive aromas of prunes and ripe red and black fruit. On the palate, it has a full, opulent taste, with velvety tannins and a long and pleasant aftertaste. Try it with pork skewers or liver.

Red Wine Chateau Purcari Merlot de Purcari 2019. The oldest and most respected winery in Moldova, the history of Chateau Purcari stretches back to an official decree released by Tsar Nicolas I in 1827. The estate enjoyed a golden age in the 19th century with a slew of medals won at European wine shows. This success has now been repeated in the 21st century, with Chateau Purcari winning an impressive collection of medals at the Decanter World Wine Awards in 2019 and 2020. Bordeaux varieties like Merlot were originally planted here in this south-eastern part of Moldova by French settlers who recognised the land’s similarity to their native Bordeaux. The grapes for this bottling are carefully harvested by hand and vinified using traditional Moldovan winemaking methods. Ageing takes place in French oak barrels for 6 months prior to bottling. Luscious dark fruit notes dominate the nose including cassis, blackberries and ripe black cherries along with subtle hints of dark chocolate and tobacco leaf. On the palate the tannins are smooth and well-rounded and there are ample fruit flavours which linger on the tongue. The fruit-forward flavour profile makes it a great match for smoked duck breast, veal, charcuterie or a pork steak.
